26th. Always Grateful.

26th. Always Grateful.

Before today ends, I just want to share how incredibly grateful I am for these 26 years of living. From the sweet treats by my coworkers, to scuba diving a new site and getting buzzed by a turtle, hammocking on the beach with friends, listening to live music, getting gifted with pearls, a donation to my fave nonprofit, and the adventure fund, and a super rad Earth Day Everyday shirt from Ian (and designed by his talented coworker Valentine), all the back rubs and TLC from my main squeeze, ahhh and eating way too much good food… This weekend has been absolutely exceptional!

Plus, we officially booked our Puerto Rico leg of our May trip and got confirmation from our great friends that they’ll be meeting us there!! I’m thrilled for a new year of growth, learnings, and adventures!

Family Photos on Christmas Day

Family Photos on Christmas Day

My little family has grown so much in the last few years. I met my boyfriend, he brought home a stray kitten he named Officer Scruffles, and more recently we’ve adopted our favorite pup Yodi. We’re head over heels paws in love with our unlikely family of drifters.

Christmas Day was sheer perfection. Read more about what we did in my post here.

We took some family photos doing what we love – hanging out in the ocean!

Yodi is a natural in the water. She grew up here at Coconut Point so she’s always swimming whenever we go out. And in case you didn’t know, Officer Scruffles does in fact swim. Photo or it didn’t happen? If you want to see him in action, check out my Instagram video here, where he jumps into the ocean for a swim.

It was so fun to just hang out with my furry family under the sun.

Balancing a Long Weekend

Balancing a Long Weekend

The long weekend was a blessing in disguise. I didn’t make any plans because the weather forecast was expected to be torrential rain and heavy winds. In fact, I wanted to do absolutely nothing—which is hard for me—with the exception of doing at least one productive thing.

And it turned out to be the perfect balance of rest and recreation.

Journaling
I have been journaling like mad lately. There’s something about it that is so therapeutic and healing because I ended up hand making a couple of notebooks, and sewed a plastic bag dispenser. I’ve really gotten into bullet journaling which is a whole science on its own, but it’s flexible and forces me to step away from my laptop or smartphone, and just write, with a little bit of order than my usual long form writing.

Sailboat Sleepovers
Ian and I try to make it out to the SV Tipsea at least once a month for a sleepover. Ian is usually doing maintenance on the boat, and I’ll kick my feet up with a book and read until we prepare a simple dinner and watch a movie in bed. This weekend, the inclement weather meant a lot of patching up leaks, rocking back and forth in the berth, and waking up to the sound of extra strong gusts of wind howling into the harbor. Surprisingly though, I didn’t get seasick and I was in my most relaxed state all weekend while reading and writing on the SV Tipsea.

Fogama’a Beach
For the Presidents Day holiday, the dark clouds seemed to take a break and we shot off to the beach last minute and asap. It was still overcast, but we trekked over to Fogama’a Cove and made it look like the sun was shining. We snorkeled out to wander the reefs, waved over to the NPS boats outside of the cove, drank fresh niu, and took photos. I thought I wanted nothing more than to be lazy this weekend but I should have known that a little ocean therapy was what I really needed.

Coastweeks entertainment: Utulei Taupou Manaia

Coastweeks entertainment: Utulei Taupou Manaia

This last weekend was the Coastweeks Family Fun Beach Day.

It’s a huge annual event put on by the Department of Commerce Coastal Management Program and supported by various agencies and businesses. There are outrigger canoe races, kayak races, food booths, jumping castles, water slides, stand up paddling, game booths, prizes, and live entertainment – and they are all going on at the same time. As the name suggests, it’s a beach day plus a lot of fun.

Samoan Feet at Coastweeks 2016

I was busy running around coordinating two paddling teams, a game booth, and a photo booth, and was lucky to have caught a break right in time to watch the Utulei youth group hit the stage. Their performance included a sāsā, aufaipese, traditional siva, and the taualuga.

The Siva Samoa is an essential part of the culture. Song and dance to tell a story, retell old legends, and give praises to God. It’s one of the many beautiful parts of growing up in American Samoa. Though I don’t usually dance, my heart still swells a little with pride when I see the smiling faces and the bright and colorful puletasi.

It makes me wanna scream CHEEEEHOOOO!
