Description
Flag Day is American Samoa’s annual national holiday that marks the date when the islands were ceded to the U.S. on April 17, 1900. I created this digital image from a photo I took of the U.S. flag and the American Samoa flag flying side by side during the Flag Day parade at the Veteran’s Stadium on April 17, 2019. A little fun fact: the bald eagle doesn’t live in American Samoa but represents America’s guardianship over the islands, in its clutches are the uatogi (Samoan war club) and fue (Samoan fly whisk) which symbolize the government’s power and the wisdom of traditional leaders.
