Description

The traditional Samoan fale was built completely by hand and without any metal or nails. Instead, coral rubble, sand, and lava rocks were used to lay the foundation, native tree trunks from the ulu, ifi lele, or fau trees were used to build the frame posts, and lau (leaves) from sugarcane or coconut trees were used to make a thatched roof — these were all lashed together using ’afa (braided sennit rope made from dried coconut husks). The fale was made by entire communities of both men and women, and that’s why I wanted to create this sticker as an ode of appreciation to this blend of architecture, history, and culture.
